The G road test in Ontario

The G road test is the last step to a full Ontario licence: about 30 minutes that include expressway driving. You can take it 12 months after your G2. Before it starts you must declare your highway experience, and if you don’t have enough, you lose half your fee.

When

The highway experience declaration

You must have driven at least 5 times in the last 3 months on a road signed 80 km/h or more, or a 400-series highway, and say how long those trips usually were (under 5 km, 5 to 15 km, or over 15 km). Without it, the test is cancelled and you lose 50% of the fee.

The 400-series highways DriveTest counts: 400, 401, 402, 403, 404, 405, 406, 407, 409, 410, 416, 417, 420, 427, the QEW, the Don Valley Parkway, the Gardiner Expressway, the E. C. Row Expressway and the Conestoga Parkway.

What’s on the G test now

Until further notice, full-time DriveTest centres give a shorter G test without parallel parking, roadside stops, three-point turns and driving in residential neighbourhoods, since the G2 test already covered them. Travel points still give the standard test. Either way, expect:

  1. 01Left and right turns

    • Check mirrors and traffic, move into the correct lane early and signal in good time.
    • Slow down smoothly and keep a 2 to 3 second gap behind the vehicle ahead.
    • If you stop, stop fully behind the stop line or crosswalk, with your wheels straight while you wait to turn left.
    • Check again (blind spot included) before turning, keep both hands on the wheel and don’t shift gears mid-turn.
    • Finish in the matching lane without crossing markings or touching the curb, then get back up to speed.
  2. 02Stop intersections

    • Stop completely behind the stop line, or the crosswalk or sidewalk edge if there’s no line. No rolling stops.
    • If you’re behind another car, leave room to pull out around it.
    • Look both ways, then go with both hands on the wheel, without shifting in the intersection.
  3. 03Through intersections

    • Scan cross traffic and be ready to brake if someone might enter, without slowing for no reason.
    • Don’t change lanes in the intersection. If it’s blocked, slow or stop rather than going around.
    • Check your mirrors again once you’re through.
  4. 04Lane changes

    • Find a safe gap, signal early, and check your blind spot over your shoulder.
    • Match the speed of the new lane and move smoothly into its centre, keeping a 2 to 3 second gap.
    • Cancel your signal.
  5. 05Curves

    • Slow down before the curve, not in it, and hold a steady speed through it.
    • Look through the curve to stay centred in your lane, and speed up as it straightens.
  6. 06Business areas

    • Watch driveways, side streets, crosswalks and rail crossings.
    • Check mirrors every 5 to 10 seconds, use the safest through lane and stay centred.
    • Stop far enough back to see the rear wheels of the car ahead.
  7. 07Freeway driving

    • Use the on-ramp to find a gap and match freeway speed, then merge smoothly and cancel your signal.
    • On the freeway: mirrors every 5 to 10 seconds, scan 12 to 15 seconds ahead, keep a 2 to 3 second gap and stay out of blind spots.
    • To exit: signal before the exit lane, move in without crossing solid lines and slow down only once you’re in it.

G2 rules until you pass

  • Your blood-alcohol level must be zero (and every driver 21 or under must be at zero, whatever their licence).
  • Every passenger wears a seat belt.
  • You can drive alone, at any time, on every road, including 400-series highways.
  • If you’re 19 or under, between midnight and 5 a.m.: one passenger aged 19 or under in your first six months, then up to three. This doesn’t apply with a fully licensed driver (four or more years) beside you, or when the passengers are immediate family.

Not every centre gives the G test: some small centres and most travel points give only the G2. Each DriveTest centre page shows which tests it gives and the nearest centres that give the G.

+How much is the G road test?

$91.25, including tax.

+Is parallel parking on the G test?

Not at full-time DriveTest centres for now: the shorter G test leaves out parallel parking, roadside stops, three-point turns and residential streets. Travel points still include them.

Your appointment is cancelled and you lose 50% of the road test fee. You need 5 drives on qualifying highways in the last 3 months.
