Graduated licensing
G1, G2 and G: how Ontario licensing works
Ontario gives new drivers their licence in three steps. Most people take 20 to 24 months to get from G1 to a full G, and you have 5 years to finish. If your G2 is about to run out, you can requalify by passing the G2 road test again.
- 1
Apply and pass the G1 knowledge test
At least 16, an Ontario resident, with ID. You take a vision test, pay $159.75, and write the knowledge test on road signs and rules of the road (80% to pass). No appointment needed.
Practise for the G1 - 2
Drive on your G1 for 12 months
Or 8 months if you finish a Ministry-approved beginner driver education (BDE) course. Always with an experienced driver beside you.

- 4
Drive on your G2 for 12 months
With zero alcohol and limits on young passengers late at night.
G2 rules - 5
Pass the G road test
About 30 minutes, with highway driving. Then you have a full G licence.
G road test guide
G1 rules
- Your blood-alcohol level must be zero.
- A fully licensed driver with at least four years of experience sits in the front passenger seat. Their blood-alcohol level must be under 0.05 (zero if they’re 21 or under).
- Every passenger wears a seat belt.
- No driving between midnight and 5 a.m.
- No 400-series highways or high-speed expressways (401, 403, QEW, Gardiner, Conestoga Parkway…), unless the accompanying driver is a licensed driving instructor.
G2 rules
- Your blood-alcohol level must be zero (and every driver 21 or under must be at zero, whatever their licence).
- Every passenger wears a seat belt.
- You can drive alone, at any time, on every road, including 400-series highways.
- If you’re 19 or under, between midnight and 5 a.m.: one passenger aged 19 or under in your first six months, then up to three. This doesn’t apply with a fully licensed driver (four or more years) beside you, or when the passengers are immediate family.
